She avoids wearing skinny pants, as this will accentuate the crankle’s part.

Instead, she wears long flared pants and covers this with ankle boots.

All I can say is this combination makes her instantly look 5 inches taller visually and not to mention, her legs look slimmer.

Some readers emailed me which one is more flattering: Flared pants or wide-leg pants?

For me, I will always choose flared pants. As a petite girl, wide-leg pants always drag me down and I just don’t think how this can contour the shape of my leg.

As a 5.2 ft girl, I never thought knee-high boots can look flattering on me.

Well, clearly I was wrong.

After owning the flat over-the-knee boots these years, I realize I can still look put together in them.

They are comfy, chic, and perfect for daily wear! This does take me some time to figure out how to look tall and chic with the flat boots but it’s all worth it!

The bagginess of the heels will visually shorten my legs and make my calves appear to be thicker.

For me, the fitted stretchy design always looks the best.

Showing the curves of the legs just makes my legs look thinner in black boots even without the high heels.

But can you look feminine in platform sneakers without wearing dresses? That’s a BIG YES.

For an elegant look, throw a Chanel-style tweed jacket over a ribbon dress shirt with stark white platform shoes; it just looks so high fashion, even to the simplest look.

As a perfect blend of high street fashion and sporty looks, a pair of chunky white sneakers is a must-have in baddie girl style.

To pull off an “I’ve got style and I know it” look, front knot your loose-cut tee and wear the high waist biker shorts to feature your curves.

And for the girls who wanna add some retro flares to the look, a graphic tee and flared pants just bring you back to the good old 80s.

As a self-proclaimed vintage fashion girl since 15 years old, I’ve been trying out all kinds of vintage shoes for over a decade now, and here’s my conclusion:

Some of the cutest vintage heels can also be the most uncomfortable shoes ever.

The struggle is real 🥹

If you are reading this post, you are in luck as I’ve gathered 8 types and 21 pairs in a total of retro shoe heels that are actually comfortable.

1. Ribbon & bow retro shoe heels

Guess what, bows are for grown-ups too.

When it comes to vintage looks, a glamorous pair of bow pumps boosts the aesthetic of the looks tenfold.

For an ultra-feminine style, delicate floral white lace tights and shimmery statement bow heels are here to make sure all eyes are on you.

For me, I usually avoid the super retro-looking shoes as they can be hard to mix and match in daily life.

My recent favorite brand is Jeffrey Campbell, I think their design is somewhere in between so I can max out the times I wear the shoes.

Another big plus is they are very comfortable given this price range!

Black sheer tights and little bow pointy heels kinda night.

How romantic.

2. Retro & comfy: Mary Jane

Mary Janes is the never-ending appeal, there’s something whimsical about it.

For a classic combo, get dressed up in a preppy schoolgirl in solid white tights and red Mary Janes.

Whether you match it with a pleated skirt or an LBD, the possibilities are literally endless.

Need I say more? This pair will work wonders with a nice tea dress.

These classy pairs of Nordstrom are really comfy.

3. Floral & print vintage shoes

Of course, floral prints are always one of the most used elements when it comes to vintage heels.

And we are talking about all kinds of styles.

These groovy pairs of meaty floral high platforms just scream full attitude.

These heels are 100% perfect for a nostalgic disco party – bold, fun, and whimsical.

I am not sure whether this pair is still on sale or not but it’s too darling to not include – this is such a nice vintage pair for the wedding.

If you want to do it on a budget, it seems there are many brands doing similar designs these days, dig them out!

This floral pattern just can’t be any more retro.

It’s giving cottagecore and I bet it will look amazing with a baby blue gingham dress.

4. Metallic vintage heels

Let’s be real, it’s hard to deny the appeal of metallic heels – they just naturally add an extra pop of fun to the dress-up.

Again, I am picking shoes that can look retro when you pair the right dress but are modern enough to wear with normal outfits.

Thin straps just somehow look so sassy and feminine.

High platforms with four metallic color blocks = ultimate mood booster.

I can tell it will look perfect with a cute top and boot-cut jeans.

A white tee and jeans look too casual, throw these tasteful pairs on and people will instantly feel like you’ve given serious thought to your look.

5. When in doubt, Polka dot

Anna Kendrick said, “You can’t have a bad day in polka dots.”

and I agree with my whole heart.

Polka dots are just deliciously fun to wear!

If an all-over polka-dot dress looks too overwhelming for you, well, I’d say taste the water with polka-dot heels.

To make a statement, go matchy matchy in a cute pouch and heels!

Seriously, regardless of the seasons, polka dots literally can be spotted everywhere.

Or else, style your regular heels with polka-dot socks to freshen things up!

6. Preppy retro loafer heels

Fashion comes and goes but preppy fashion is here to stay.

Especially these days, the old money /quiet luxury style is taking a MAJOR moment.

A wild floral pants and loafer heels anyone?

It gives a wonderful mix of nostalgic disco feel.

Oh the good old 80s.

These pairs are one of my proudest finds these days – they are just as comfy as it’s versatile.

Imagine how darling to match it with a sleeveless polo and mini platted skirt.

Plus, the pointy toe design just create a V shape and helps elongate your legs visually.

As a 5”3 girl, I do spot the difference!

To spice things up, again, go experiments with all kinds of socks.

7. Play with colors & patterns

From frame stitch to checkered to houndstooth, you can play with all kinds of prints in the retro heels department.

The candy cane-inspired red and white buckle mule heels are from one of my favorite shoe brands Manolo Blahnik.

Just lovely.

8. T-bar shoe heels

For a 1940s and 1950s look, consider slipping on the graceful t-bar shoe heels!

As a curvy girl myself, wearing thigh-high socks is a real battle for me.

Most of the time, my socks just keep falling down and I have to fix them every 20 minutes.

Even when the thighs are well fixed, my “muffin top” on my thigh ( I tried my best to describe…) just keeps squeezing out and that’s definitely not what I want.

It takes me some time to figure out what kind of thigh-high socks suits me the best and it’s always worth it.

Now, I do find thigh-high socks really flattering on me, and here are my 8 tips on how to wear thigh-high socks for plus-size ladies.

1. Be intentional about the fabric

For the first tip, let’s talk about the basics first.

If you want to look good in your high-knee socks, it’s always worth it to invest some money in them.

I’ve bought some really cheap socks before and realized there’s no spandex in them.

Spandex is a lightweight fiber to gives some flexibility to the fabric and makes the high-knee socks more stretchy and breathable and that’s really crucial for us!

So ladies, always look for high-knee socks with a higher percentage of spandex material to avoid a refund!

Trust me, this is plain torture to wear knee-high thighs without flexibility.

The truth is, we are all perfect imperfections…

You want to learn all the styling hacks ONLY if you feel like it.

Remember, we never have the need to “fix” our bodies!

You don’t have to be pretty like HER, you can be pretty like YOU.

2. Go monochrome for your legs and shoes for elongating effect

For the ladies who worry wearing thigh-high socks will make you look shorter, this is not true!

If you are wearing the common black over-knee socks, you can always wear black heels or black pointed flats for a tone-on-tone look.

With the V shape shoe lining and the same color as your high knee socks, it makes your legs appear to be longer and slimmer.

Of course, you can go with dark grey socks with grey shoes, they can look flattering too!

But always avoid wearing shoes with a big color contrast with your socks as this will visually separate your legs into a few different chunks and fail to avoid a slender leg figure overall.

3. Wear a sheer thigh underneath the thigh-high socks

As I’ve said before, I can’t help but squeeze the “muffin top of my thigh” whenever I wear thigh-high socks.

One of the easiest ways to deal with that is wearing the invisible sheer thighs underneath so gently squeeze my legs a little bit first before applying the thigh-high socks.

That way, those muffin tops will be less obvious and also hide my cellulite at the back of my leg too!

If you want a more slimming effect, style your black thigh-high socks with a sheer black thigh underneath is always a perfect look! “

After all, “Black x black” = double flattering!

4. Wear Fake Thigh high socks

If you think tip 3 is too much work for you (which is not actually…), you can always buy the fake thigh-high socks!

Yes, this is a real thing sold on Aliexpress and other places online.

With the fake thigh-high socks, you can look like you are wearing over-knee socks while in fact, you are just wearing normal pantyhose!

But since this is a relatively new product, their sizing may just stick to at most L.

But still, I want to share these tips with you as I realized not so many girls know about it.

You can always keep an eye out for the oversize fake thigh-high socks in the near future!

5. Pull your over-knee socks inside out

Another way to avoid socks from falling is to pull your socks inside out like in the photo above!

You don’t need knit over-knee socks to do that, you can do it on any kind of socks.

With easy folding and some adjustment, it can prevent your socks from falling.

Unless your socks are too loose, otherwise this trick should work!

6. Use Roll-On Body Fixative on your thighs

This tip is basic but I know some ladies out there still struggle should they get one.

Seriously, procrastinate no more as you will need this in many unexpected ways.

Besides applying them on the thigh area to keep your socks up, you can always use body glue for the loose top and tube dresses.

Nothing exciting, I am using JOBST Body Fixative that everyone else is using. All I can say is this little glue meets its slogan – IT STAYS!

7. Wear black garters and elastic clip garters

When it comes to garters, people always think of sexy lingerie.

While that can be one of the ways to style your over-knee socks, you can always try on these functional elastic clip garters to spice up your socks and prevent them from falling in the meantime!

I have to admit that I am addicted to buying different types of elastic clip garters to style my over-knee socks now.

8. Avoid printed over-knee socks

Last but not least, avoid the big prints on your over-knee socks.

When it comes to over-knee socks, I do think less is more, and black plain socks are always my favorite.

Not only does it look classy, but it can also pop up on my top and dress as well. If you are really into printed over-knee socks, at least you stay away from the big prints like thick stripes.

Big prints naturally have an exaggerated effect.

With the big prints on the stretchy over-knee socks, it can further widen and shorten your leg, which is a big Nono.
